Serena
oraios/serena
An MCP toolkit built on language servers that lets agents read and edit code by finding symbols, references and functions instead of reading whole files.

Good for
- Let the agent look up definitions and references by symbol instead of reading whole files
- Rename, move and refactor code across files
- Cut token use and mistaken edits in large or multi-language projects
- Plug into MCP clients such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and JetBrains IDEs
Getting started
- Make sure uv is installed (the command uses uvx)
- Run claude mcp add serena -- uvx --from git+https://github.com/oraios/serena serena start-mcp-server
- Give Claude Code tasks as usual; the agent will use Serena's symbol tools to find and edit code
Before you install
Free open source language servers are used by default; the JetBrains plugin backend is a paid plugin with a free trial. Serena supplies tools only, so an LLM still does the work.
